STATUS OF IRAQI ASSETS THAT WERE FROZEN IN THE UNITED STATES


Approximately $1.6 billion in Iraqi assets were frozen in August 1990, when Iraq invaded Kuwait. The U.S. Justice Department, Foreign Claims Settlement Commission opened a registration of potential claims against those funds. Gulf War veterans that have been ill since the war, because of exposure to Iraqi chemical warfare agents, registered as potential claimants with the Justice Department. On March 20, 2003, by Executive Order, the President designated those funds to be used for the rebuilding of Iraq, however
